I think it is astounding that the subject matter is about vulnerable human beings who have contributed to Swedish society by working, paying taxes, etc, and the response from the Foreign Minister, at least in this article, is devoid of humanity. We're talking about a 74-year-old in full-time dementia care ordered to leave, and a 78-year-old widow with 21 years in Sweden given a deadline to go. These are exactly the cases a functioning system should have room for instead they're being handled like missed paperwork. Sweden has issued more Brexit-related removal orders than any other EU country, largely due to a rigid deadline system. Treating a 74-year-old's missed form the same as any other technicality isn't rule of law, it's a system that's lost sight of who it's actually governing.

Same outcome if the Social Democrats win — their own programme promises similar ever tighter migration rules. Deporting a 74-year-old in a dementia home is not a policy choice, it is a culture that cannot grant an exception without feeling it has granted a privilege. Hungary got to illiberalism through God. Sweden may well get there through bureaucracy, and call it equality. From one extreme in 2015 to another one in 2026.
